OCTOBER 6 ~ ON THiS DAY in History

1582 – The 6th day of October was skipped in Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain because of the implementation of the Gregorian calendar.

1683 – Germantown was founded  in the colony of Pennsylvania by German immigrant families on the 6th October in 1683. This day is remembered as German-American Day, marking the first major immigration of German people to America.

1862 ~ MELBOURNE ZOO opened on the 6th October 1862, celebrating the 150th anniversary in 2012. Melbourne Zoo is Australia‘s oldest zoo and was based on London Zoo. The zoo was opened at the 55-acre (22 ha) Royal Park site, donated by the City of Melbourne. Before the opening of the Melbourne Zoo, animals were housed at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Melbourne.

1876 – The American Library Association known as the oldest and largest library association in the world was founded on the 6th October 1876.

1889 – Thomas Edison the American inventor showed his first motion picture on the 6th October 1889.

1903 – The High Court of Australia sat for the first time on the 6th October 1903.

1922George Price the American population geneticist was born on the 6th October 1922 (died 6th January 1975).

1927 – The Jazz Singer opened, becoming the first prominent talking movie on the 6th October 1927.

1938 – Serge Nubret the French bodybuilder and actor was born on the 6th October 1938 (died 2011).

1942 – Britt Ekland, Swedish actress

1946 – Tony Greig the South African–English cricketer and sportscaster was born on the 6th October 1946 (died 2012).

1951 – Kevin Cronin the American singer-songwriter and guitarist from REO Speedwagon was born on the 6th October 1951.

1954 – David Hidalgo the American singer-songwriter and guitaristfrom Los Lobos was born on the 6th October 1954.

1963 – Elisabeth Shue the American actress was born on the 6th October 1963.

1977 –  The MiG-29 made its first flight on the 6th October 1977.

1978 ~ Johnny O’Keefe the Australian singer-songwriter died from a drug overdose on the 19th January 1978 aged 43, at St Vincent’s Hospital, Darlinghurst (born 19th January 1935). Johnny O’Keefe funeral footage…

1979 – Pope John Paul II became the 1st pontiff to visit the White House on the 6th October 1979.

1987 – Fiji became a republic on the 6th October 1987.

2000 – Slobodan Milošević the Yugoslav president resigned on the 6th October 2000.

2007 – Jason Lewis completed the 1st human-powered circumnavigation of the globe on the 6th October 2000.
