1493 – Christopher Columbus set sail for Spain from Hispaniola on the 15th January 1493, ending his first voyage to the New World.

1759 – The British Museum opened on the 15th January 1759.

1870 – A political cartoon for the first time symbolized the Democratic Party with a donkey (“A Live Jackass Kicking a Dead Lion” by Thomas Nast for Harper’s Weekly) on the 15th January 1870.

1889 – The Coca-Cola Company, then known as the Pemberton Medicine Company, was originally incorporated in Atlanta, Georgia on the 15th January 1889.

1910 – Construction ended on the Buffalo Bill Dam in WyomingUnited States on the 15th January 1919, which was the highest dam in the world at the time, at 325 ft (99 m).

1929 – Martin Luther King, Jr. the American minster, activist and Nobel Prize laureate was born on on the 15th January 1929 (died 1968 aged 39).

1936 – The first building to be completely covered in glass, built for the Owens-Illinois Glass Company, was completed in Toledo, Ohio on the 15th January 1936.

1943 – The world’s largest office building, The Pentagon, was dedicated in Arlington, Virginia on the 15th January 1943.

1948 – Ronnie Van Zant the American singer-songwriter from Lynyrd Skynyrd was born on the 15th January 1948 (died 1977).

1959 – Pete Trewavas the English bass player from Marillion was born on the 15th January 1959.

1962 – The Derveni papyrus, Europe’s oldest surviving manuscript dating to 340 BC, was found in northern Greece on the 15th January 1962.

1966 – Lisa Lisa the American singer was born on the 15th January 1966.

1967 – The first Super Bowl was played in Los Angeles, California on the 15th January 1967. The Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 35–10.

1969 – The Soviet Union launched Soyuz 5 on the 15th January 1969.

1974Happy Days the American television sitcom was first broadcast from the 15th January 1974, until the 24th September 1984 on ABC. 2009 – US Airways Flight 1549 made an emergency landing in the Hudson River shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport in New York, New York on the 15th January 2001. All passengers and crew members survive.
