Happy April Fools’ Day, April is a good time for thinking out of the box ~ Art by Anton K. Kressnig

“Take the time to think out of the box this month, when looking at life and the challenges you are confronted with.” ~ Anton K

APRiL FOOL’S DAY was first recorded in association with April 1st in 1932, and foolishness on this 1st day of April in 1392, as found in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. April Fools’ Day aka All Fools Day is celebrated by people playing good-humoured foolishness, funny jokes, hoaxes and practical jokes on friends, family, teachers, neighbors, work mates and others. The jokes only last till noon in Australia, Canada, Cyprus, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK, and if anyone who plays a trick after noon is called an April Fool and taunted with “April Fool’s Day’s past and gone, You’re the fool for making one.” The jokes last all day in most other countries such as America, Brazil, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Poland, Scotland, Sweden, South Korea, Russia and The Netherlands. In France, Italy and (French speaking) Canada they attempt to attach a paper fish to the victim’s back without being noticed, and say “April’s fish” in their language.

…but nobody is 100% sure about the actual history of April Fools’ Day. Some people believe the origins of April Fools’ Day date way back to 536 BC in Iran, where the Iranians play jokes on each other on the 13th day of the Persian new year (Norouz), which falls on the 1st or 2nd of April, and known as Sizdah Bedar, the oldest prank-tradition in the world, still practiced today. In Poland April Fool was taken so seriously that the very important alliance with Leopold that was signed on the 1st of April in 1683, was backdated to the 31st of March.

I’ve had some great results with my own April Fool’s Day pranks on Facebook. The first prank was a status post on Facebook on the 1st April 2012 announcing the deactivation of my Facebook account:

“How time flies, that time has come to say goodbye, as i deactivate my Facebook account at noon today, one of my biggest challenges in a long time, when i start the 12MVS ~ 12 Month Vow of Silence. Peace & love to all you good people until this day next year in 2014 when i reactivate this account.” ~ Anton K (posted on Facebook 1st April 2012)

The second prank was another status post on Facebook on the 1st April 2013, again announcing the deactivation of my Facebook account:

“I’m back from a 1 week Vow Of Silence! I survived a whole week without Facebook!.. and from noon today i will be attempting a 12 month Vow Of Silence, 1 whole year without Facebook or any other social media, i look forward to returning here as a new person after this detoxifying journey, and posting my next status in April 2013” ~ Anton K (posted on Facebook 1st April 2012)
