1498 – Christopher Columbus became the 1st European to visit Venezuela on the 1st August 1498.

1831 – A new London Bridge opened on the 1st August 1831.

1834 – Slavery was abolished in the British Empire on the 1st August 1834, as the Slavery Abolition Act 1833 came into force.

1855 – The 1st ascent of Monte Rosa was on the 1st August 1855. It’s the 2nd highest summit in the Alps.
