1938 – Howard Hughes set a new record by completing a 91 hour airplane flight around the world on the 10th day of July in 1938.

JULY 11 ~ ON THiS DAY in History

1776 ~ CAPTAiN JAMES COOK began his 3rd and last voyage on the 11th July 1776. James Cook commanded HMS Resolution for the 2nd time while Captain Charles Clerke commanded HMS Discovery. The voyage was planned to return Omai to Tahiti, and discover the Northwest Passage. On this voyage, James Cook became the 1st European to visit the Hawaiian Islands (1778). He also named the Archipelago the Sandwich Islands after the 4th Earl of Sandwich the acting 1st Lord of the Admiralty.

1946 ~ The BiKiNi was unveiled by French automobile engineer Louis Réard when he introduced the daring two-piece swimsuit at the Piscine Molitor on the 5th July in 1946, a popular swimming pool in Paris. Prior to this, Louis Réard could not find a model to wear his design, so he ended up hiring Micheline Bernardini, a nude dancer from the Casino de Paris, to display the string bikini with a g-string back. Louis Reard dubbed the new swimsuit “bikini,” inspired by a news-making U.S. atomic test that took place earlier that week off the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean.

1971 ~ JULiAN ASSANGE the Australian activist best known as the editor-in-chief and founder of WikiLeaks was born on 3rd July 1971. Julian Assange was a hacker-activist in his teen years, before becoming a computer programmer, and then internationally renowned for his controversial work with www.WikiLeaks.org, which gained International attention in 2010 when, with partners in the news media, began to publish U.S. military and diplomatic documents. Julian Assange and WikiLeaks have been formally designated as “enemies of the United States” by the U.S. Defense Department. and has been subject to a European Arrest Warrant since December 2010, in response to a Swedish police request for questioning in relation to a rape and sexual assault investigation. Since the 19th June 2012, Julian Assange has been residing in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he was granted diplomatic asylum, but the British government intend to extradite him to Sweden, under that arrest warrant if he leaves the embassy. Julian fears leaving the embassy, as it may result in his subsequent extradition to the United States of America to face charges.
