1756 – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart the Austrian composer was born on the 27th January 1756 (died 1791 aged 35).

1785 – The University of Georgia was founded on the 27th January 1785, becoming the first public university in the United States.

1832 – Lewis Carroll the English author was born on the 27th January 1832 (died 1898).

1888 – The National Geographic Society was founded in Washington, D.C. on the 27th January 1888.

1933 – Mohamed Al-Fayed the Egyptian-Monacan businessman was born on the 27th January 1933.

1939 – First flight of the Lockheed P-38 Lightning was on the 27th January 1939.

1956 – Mimi Rogers the American actress was born on the 27th January 1956.

1969Patton Oswalt the American stand-up comedian, writer, actor and voice actor was born on the 27th January 1969. Patton Oswalt is best known for his roles as Spencer Olchin in The King of Queens, and voicing Remy in Ratatouille.

1972 – Mark Owen the English singer-songwriter from Take That was born on the 27th January 1972.

1974 – The Brisbane River breached its banks on the 27th January 1974, causing the largest flood to affect the city of Brisbane in the 20th century.

2006 – Western Union discontinued its Telegram and Commercial Messaging services on the 27th January 2006 .
