1558 – France took Calais on the 7th January 1558, the last continental possession of England.

1610 – Galileo Galilei made his first observation of the four Galilean moonsGanymedeCallistoIo and Europa on the 7th January 1610, although he was not able distinguish the last 2 until the following day.

1782 – The first American commercial bank, the Bank of North America, opened on the 7th January 1782.

1785 ~ Jean-Pierre Blanchard from France and John Jeffries from America travelled from Dover, England, to Calais, France, in a gas balloon on the 7th January 1785, making the pair the world’s first international air travelers.

1797 – The modern Italian flag was first used on the 7th January 1797.

1954 – Georgetown-IBM experiment: the first public demonstration of a machine translation system, was held in New York at the head office of IBM on the 7th January 1954.
