1826 ~ Frederic Edwin Church the American painter was born on the 4th May 1826 (died 1900).

1827 ~ John Hanning Speke the English explorer was born on the 4th May 1827 (died 1864)

1932 – AL CAPONE the Atlanta, Georgia mobster began serving an 11 year prison sentence for tax evasion on the 4th May 1932.

1941 ~ NiCKOLAS ASHFORD the American recording artist was born on the 4th day of May in 1941 (died in 2011 aged 70). Nicholas sang and wrote songs with his wife Valerie Simpson, and were best known as ASHFORD & SiMPSON. Together the trio wrote Let’s Go Get Stoned, which gave Ray Charles a number one hit in 1966. Also that year Ashford & Simpson wrote Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand) and many more. They wrote many hit songs including Chaka Khan’s I’m Every Woman (1978). Performing as a duet, Ashford & Simpson had a hit with “Solid” in 1984 (US) and 1985 (UK). The duo was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002.

1979 ~ MARGARET THATCHER became the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on the 4th day of May in 1979.

1999 ~ iNTERNATiONAL FiREFiGHTERS’ DAY was instituted on the 4th May 1999 due to the deaths of 5 firefighters in tragic circumstances in a wildfire in Linton, Victoria, Australia. Here is another one Anton: Born on this day Nickolas Ashford (May 4, 1941 – August 22, 2011) along with Valerie Simpson (born August 26, 1946), were a husband and wife songwriting/production team and recording artists. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3PoTnkLfxE This 1985 song made it to a ‘Solid’ No 19 in Oz.
