NOVEMBER 25 ~ ON THiS DAY in History

1343 – The Earthquake of 1343 in the Tyrrhenian Sea caused a tsunami which devastated Naples in Italy on the 25th November 1343, and also at the Maritime Republic of Amalfi.

1667 – A deadly earthquake rocked Shemakha in the Caucasus on the 25th November 1667, killing 80,000 people.

1703 – The Great Storm of 1703, the greatest windstorm ever recorded in the southern part of Great Britain, reached its peak intensity on the 25th November 1703, and continued to the 27th November, with wind gusts up to 120 mph, killing 9,000 people.

1759 – An earthquake hit the Mediterranean destroying Beirut and Damascus on the 25th November 1759, killing over 30,000 people.

1833 – A massive undersea earthquake, estimated magnitude between 8.7-9.2 rocked Sumatra on the 25th November 1833, producing a massive tsunami all along the Indonesian coast.

1835 – Andrew Carnegie the Scottish-American businessman and founder of the Carnegie Steel Company was born on the 25th November 1835 (died 1919).

1839 – A cyclone slammed India with high winds and a 40 foot storm surge on the 25th November 1839, destroying the port city of Coringa (which was never completely rebuilt). The storm wave swept inland, taking with it 20,000 ships and thousands of people. An estimated 300,000 deaths resulted from this disaster.

1844 – Karl Benz the German engineer, businessman and founder of Mercedes-Benz was born on the 25th November 1844 (died 1929).

1880 – John Flynn the Australian minister and founder of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia was born on the 25th November 1880 (died 1951).

1926 – The deadliest November tornado outbreak in U.S. history struck on Thanksgiving day on the 25th November 1926. 27 twisters of great strength were reported in the Midwest, including the strongest November tornado, an estimated F4, that devastated Heber Springs, Arkansas. There were 76 deaths and over 400 injuries in total.

1950 – The Great Appalachian Storm of November 1950, known at the time as the “Storm of the Century” struck New England with hurricane force winds on the 25th November 1950, resulting in massive forest blow-downs and storm surge damage along the Northeast coast including New York City. This storm also brought blizzard conditions to the Appalachian Mountains and Ohio Valley, killing 353 people.

1952 – Agatha Christie‘s murder-mystery play The Mousetrap opened at the Ambassadors Theatre in London on the 25th November 1952, later becoming the longest continuously-running play in history.

1963 – President John F. Kennedy was buried at Arlington National Cemetery on the 25th November 1963.

1984 – 36 top musicians gathered in a Notting Hill studio and recorded Band Aid‘s Do They Know It’s Christmas on the 25th November 1984, to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia.

1987 – Typhoon Nina pummels the Philippines with category 5 winds of 165 mph on the 25th November 1987, and a surge destroys entire villages, killing 1,036 people.

1996 – An ice storm struck the central U.S. on the 25th November 1996, killing 26 people. The powerful windstorm affected Florida with wind gusts over 90 mph, toppling trees and flipping trailers.

2000 – The 2000 Baku Earthquake took place on the 25th November 2000, with a Richter magnitude of 7.0, killing 26 people in BakuAzerbaijan, becoming the strongest earthquake in the region in 158 years.

2008 – Cyclone Nisha struck northern Sri Lanka, killing 15 people on the 25th November 2008, while displacing 90,000 others in the highest rainfall in 9 decades.

2009 – Devastating floods, known as the 2009 Saudi Arabian Floods, following freak rains swamp the city of JeddahSaudi Arabia on the 25th November 2009, during an ongoing Hajj pilgrimage. 3,000 cars were swept away and 122 people were killed by the torrents, with 350 people missing.

2013 ~ Darryn Lyons the Australian paparazzomedia personality and entrepreneur became the mayor of Geelong on the 25th November 2013.
