WORLD AUTiSM AWARENESS DAY

WORLD AUTiSM AWARENESS DAY has been held on the 2nd day of every April since 2008. Visit the Autism Awareness website to learn more about this day, and learn how we can increase acceptance, respect and support.

Autism is a disorder of neural development causing  problems with social and communication skills, with some restricted and repetitive behavior, and unusual ways of learning, paying attention, or reacting to sensations. Autism affects how nerve cells and their synapses connect and organize, affecting the brain processing information. For more information about Autism, see  the Autism Speaks webpage: What Is Autism? & Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Some people with Autism have significant disability and are unable to live independently. About 25% with Autism Spectrum Disorder (aka ASD) are nonverbal, but can learn to communicate in other ways. About 40% on the Autism Spectrum have amazing abilities, and excel in music, academics, visual skills and art.
