1944 ~ Tony Orlando the American singer was born on the 3rd April 1944.

1948 ~ President Harry S. Truman signed the Marshall Plan, authorizing $5 billion in aid for 16 countries on the 3rd April 1948.

1958 ~ Alec Baldwin the American actor was born on the 3rd April 1958.

1973 ~ Martin Cooper of Motorola made the first handheld mobile phone call on the 3rd April 1973. Martin made the call to Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs, though it took 10 years for the DynaTAC 8000X to become the first such phone to be commercially released.

1981 ~ The Osborne 1, the 1st successful portable computer, was unveiled at the West Coast Computer Faire in San Francisco on the 3rd April 1981.

1805 ~ HANS CHRiSTiAN ANDERSEN the Danish author, fairy tale writer and poet was born on the 2nd of April in 1805 (died in 1875 aged 70). Hans Christian Anderson was best known for children’s stories such as The Snow Queen, The Little Mermaid, Thumbelina, The Ugly Duckling and The Steadfast Tin Soldier. 

1891MAX ERNST the German painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and poet was born on the 2nd of April in 1891 (died in 1976 aged 84). Max Ernst was one of the primary pioneers of the Dada movement and Surrealism.

1908BUDDY EBSEN the American actor was born Christian Ludolf Ebsen, Jr. on the 2nd April 1908 (died 6th July 2003 aged 95). Buddy Ebsen was best known as Jed Clampett in the The Beverly Hillbillies and as the title character in Barnaby Jones.YouTube video: Barnaby Jones intro…

1912 ~ HERBERT MiLLS the American singer from The MiLLS BROTHERS was born on the 2nd of April in1912 (died in 1989)

1914 ~ ALEC GUiNNESS the English actor was born on the 2nd of April in 1914 (died in 2000 aged 86). Alec Guinness was best known as Herbert Pocket in Great Expectations (1946), Fagin in Oliver Twist (1948), Col. Nicholson in The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957 winning Academy Award for Best Actor) Prince Faisal in Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Yevgraf in Doctor Zhivago (1965), Professor Godbole in A Passage to India (1984) and Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars.

1947EMMYLOU HARRiS the American singer was born on the 2nd of April in 1947.

1952 ~ PAT DRUMMOND the Australian singer-songwriter from The BUSHWACKERS was born on the 2nd of April in 1952.

1960SAM SEJAVKA the Australian writer, actor, song writer and lead singer of the ’80s Melbourne band Beargarden was born on the 2nd April 1960. Sam Sejavka grew up in Mount Waverley, a suburb of Melbourne, and started his music career as a vocalist and song writer in the band The Ears. The 1986 film Dogs in Space drew inspiration from various episodes of Sam’s life during the late ’70s, which was written and directed by Sam’s friend Richard Lowenstein. The Dogs in Space film title comes from a song of the same name by The Ears. The main character of Sam was played by Michael Hutchence. 1826 ~ SAMUEL MOREY the American inventor patented the iNTERNAL COMBUSTiON ENGiNE on this 1st day of April in 1826. Samuel Morey was also a pioneer in steamships, and accumulated a total of 20 patents.

1887 ~ Mumbai Fire Brigade was established on the 1st April 1887.

1891 ~ The WRiGLEY COMPANY was founded in Chicago, Illinois on this 1st day of April in 1891. The Wrigley Company originally started selling soap and baking powder, until William Wrigley, Jr. (the founder) began packaging chewing gum with each can of baking powder in 1892. Eventually the chewing gum became more popular than the baking powder selling in more than 180 countries, with factories in Australia, Canada, China, France, India, Kenya, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Spain, Taiwan, United Kingdom and United States. 

In 2004 The Wrigley Company purchased the Life Savers and Altoids businesses from Kraft Foods for US$1.48 billion, and in 2007 they purchased A.Korkunov for $300 million. In  2008 Mars Inc acquired Wrigley for approximately $23 billion.

1924 ~ Adolf Hitler was sentenced to 5 years in jail on the 1st April 1924, for his participation in the Beer Hall Putsch, but he spent only 9 months in jail, during which he wrote Mein Kampf.

1932 ~ APRiL FOOL’S DAY was first recorded in association with April 1st and foolishness on this 1st day of April in 1392, as found in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. April Fools’ Day aka All Fools Day is celebrated by people playing good-humoured foolishness, funny jokes, hoaxes and practical jokes on friends, family, teachers, neighbors, work mates and others. The jokes only last till noon in Australia, Canada, Cyprus, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK, and if anyone who plays a trick after noon is called an April Fool and taunted with “April Fool’s Day’s past and gone, You’re the fool for making one.” The jokes last all day in most other countries such as America, Brazil, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Poland, Scotland, Sweden, South Korea, Russia and The Netherlands. In France, Italy and (French speaking) Canada they attempt to attach a paper fish to the victim’s back without being noticed, and say “April’s fish” in their language.
