1852 – The first airship powered by an engine travelled 17 miles (27 km) on the 24th September 1852,  from Paris to Trappes. The steam powered airship was created by Henri Giffard.

1869 – Black FridayGold prices plummeted on the 24th September 1869, after Ulysses S. Grant ordered the Treasury to sell large quantities of gold, after Jay Gould and James Fisk plotted to control the market.

1890 – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints officially renounced polygamy on the 24th September 1890.

1896 – F. Scott Fitzgerald the American author of The Great Gatsby was born on the 24th September 1896 (d. 1940).

1941 – Linda McCartney the American singer from Wings, photographer, and activist was born on the 24th September 1941 (died 1998).

1946 – Cathay Pacific Airways was founded in Hong Kong on the 24th September 1946.

1948 – The Honda Motor Company was founded on the 24th September 1948.

1959 – Theo Paphitis the Cypriot-English businessman was born on the 24th September 1959.

1968 – 60 Minutes debuted on CBS on the 24th September 1968.

1968 – Swaziland joined the United Nations on the 24th September 1968.

1979 – Compu-Serve launched the first consumer internet service on the 24th September 1979, which featured the 1st public electronic mail service.

1990 – Periodic Great White Spot was observed on Saturn on the 24th September 1990.

2005 – Hurricane Rita made landfall in the United States on the 24th September 2005, devastating Beaumont, Texas and parts of south western Louisiana.

2012JOBE WATSON the AFL footballer, and current captain of the Essendon Football Club, won the 2012 Brownlow Medal on the 24th day of September in 2012. Jobe Watson polled 30 votes, becoming the 6th Essendon player to win the Brownlow Medal award. Jobe is the son of former Essendon player Tim Watson.
