1872 ~ Max Ehrmann the American writer and poet was born on the 26th September 1872. Max Ehrmann is widely known for writing Desiderata (Latin = things desired) in 1927, an inspiring timelss prose poem containing wonderful words of wisdom to live by.

1888 – T. S. Eliot the American-English publisher, playwright, and critic was born on the 26th September 1888 (died 1965). T. S. Elliot was a Nobel Prize laureate.

1934 – RMS Queen Mary was launched on the 26th day of September in 1934.

1943 – Ian Chappell the Australian cricketer was born on the 26th September 1943.

1945 – Bryan Ferry the English singer-songwriter from Roxy Music was born on the 26th September 1945.

1973 – Concorde made its 1st non-stop crossing of the Atlantic in record-breaking time on the 26th day of September in 1973.

1983 ~ Stanislav Petrov aka Станисла́в Евгра́фович Петро́в the Russian retired lieutenant colonel of the Soviet Air Defence Forces saved the World from a nuclear war the 26th September 1983. He was the duty officer at the command center for the Oko nuclear early-warning system when the system reported that a missile was being launched from the United States. Petrov judged the report to be a false alarm which prevented an erroneous retaliatory nuclear attack on the United States and its NATO allies that could have resulted in large-scale nuclear war. Investigation later confirmed that the satellite warning system had malfunctioned due to sunlight.

1984 – The United Kingdom agreed to the handover of Hong Kong on the 26th day of September in 1984.
