The Moomba Festival is one of the Australia’s longest running community festivals. It is held annually in Melbourne over 4 days, on the Labour Day long weekend, and also known as Australia’s largest free community festival. Moomba is considered to be of cultural importance to Melbourne, having been celebrated since 1955, attracting up to a million people, with a record attendance of 1.7 million people in 1996.
The Moomba festival is run by the City of Melbourne, and was renamed Melbourne Moomba Waterfest In 2003. The festival is centred on and around he Yarra River. Traditional events include the Moomba parade, crowning of Moomba monarchs, fireworks, carnivals, water skiing plus other water sports, water floats, the birdman rally, live music & bands, and much more.
