NOVEMBER 5 ~ ON THiS DAY in History

1605 – Guy Fawkes was arrested during a search of the Palace of Westminster on the 5th November 1605, which foiled Robert Catesby‘s plot to destroy the House of Lords and all within it. GUY FAWKES NiGHT aka Guy Fawkes DayBonfire Night and Firework Night, is an annual commemoration observed on the 5th November since 1605.

1743 –  The transit of Mercury coordinated scientific observations were organized by Joseph-Nicolas Delisle worldwide on the 5th November 1743.

1895 – George B. Selden was granted the first U.S. patent for an automobile on the 5th November 1895.

1913 – King Otto of Bavaria was deposed by his cousin, Prince Regent Ludwig, who assumed the title Ludwig III on the 5th November 1913.

1911 – Roy Rogers the American singer, guitarist, and actor was born on the 5th November 1911 (d. 1998).

1913 – Vivien Leigh the English actress was born on the 5th November 1913 (d. 1967).

1940 – Elke Sommer the German actress was born on the 5th November 1940.

1941 – Art Garfunkel the American singer-songwriter and guitarist from Simon & Garfunkel was born on the 5th November 1941.

1946 – Gram Parsons the American singer-songwriter and guitarist was born on the 5th November 1946 (d. 1973).

1945Les Murray (AM) the Australian sports journalist and soccer broadcaster was born on the 5th November 1945.

1957 – Mike Score the English singer-songwriter and musician from A Flock of Seagulls was born on the 5th November 1957.

1963 – Tatum O’Neal the American actress and author was born on the 5th November 1963.

2006 – Saddam Hussein the former president of Iraq, and his 2 co-defendants were sentenced to death on the 5th November 2006, in the al-Dujail trial for the role in the massacre of the 148 Shi’as in 1982.

2007 – Chang’e 1, China’s 1st lunar satellite, went into orbit around the Moon on the 5th November 2006.

2013 ~ FiORENTE the Thoroughbred racehorse bred in Ireland ridden by Damien Oliver won the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday 5th November 2013, trained by Gai Waterhouse. In the 2012 Melbourne Cup Fiorente ran 2nd to Green Moon.

NOVEMBER 4 ~ ON THiS DAY in History

1783 – Mozart‘s Symphony No. 36 was performed for the 1st time on the 4th November 1783, in Linz, Austria.

1879 – Will Rogers the American actor was born on the 4th November 1979 (died 1935).

1890 ~ CARBiNE won the Melbourne Cup on the 4th November 1873 with jockey R. Ramage. Carbine came from New Zealand and was a direct descendant of Phar Lap. He competed carrying the weight record of 65.77kg, beating 38 other runners. The Melbourne Cup prize money was £13,230.

1921 – Hara Takashi the Japanese Prime Minister was assassinated in Tokyo on the 4th November 1921.

1922 – Howard Carter the English archaeologist and his men found the entrance to Pharaoh Tutankhamun‘s tomb in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt on the 4th November 1922.

1930 ~ PHAR LAP won the Melbourne Cup on the 4th November 1930 with jockey Jim Pike. Phar Lap was the only horse to be given legend status by the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. He holds the record for the shortest priced favourite in the Melbourne Cup. During the 1930 Melbourne Cup, bookmakers realised they would lose a fortune if Phar Lap was to win, and incidentally, he was shot at by gangsters on that day. Tommy Woodcock saved Phar Lap by placing himself and his pony between the shot.The Melbourne Cup prize money was £12,429.

1932 – Thomas Klestil the 10th President of Austria was born on the 4th November 1932 (died 2004).

1946 – Laura Bush the American educator and 45th First Lady of the United States was born on the 4th November 1946.

1952 – The National Security Agency was established by the United States government on the 4th November 1952.

1953 – Jacques Villeneuve the Canadian race car driver was born on the 4th November 1953.

1955 – The Vienna State Opera reopened with a performance of Beethoven‘s Fidelio on the 4th November 1955, after being rebuilt after it was destroyed in World War II.

1957 – Tony Abbott the Australian politician was born on the 4th November 1957.

1960 – Dr.Jane Goodall observed chimpanzees creating tools at the Kasakela Chimpanzee Community in Tanzania on the 4th November 1960, becoming the first-ever observation of this kind in non-human animals.

1962 – The NiM-14-Nike-Hercules was the last atmospheric nuclear test conducted by the United States on the 4th November 1962. The air defense missile was tested with it’s detonation at 69,000 feet above Johnston Island.

1969 ~ RAiN LOVER won the Melbourne Cup on the 4th November 1969 with jockey Jim Johnson, and also won the 1968 Melbourne Cup. The Melbourne Cup prize money was $77,000.

1973 – Car Free Sunday was experienced for the first time in the Netherlands on the 4th November 1973.

1975 – Curtis Stone the Australian chef and author was born on the 4th November 1975.

1994 – The World Wide Web 1st conference that focused exclusively on the subject of the commercial potential of it was held in San Francisco on the 4th November 1994.

2008 – Barack Obama became the 1st African-American to be elected President of the United States on the 4th November 2008.

1978 – Dominica gained independence from the United Kingdom on the 3rd November 1978.

1982 ~ GURNER’S LANE the chestnut gelding thoroughbred racehorse ridden by Mick Dittman won the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday 3rd November 1978, trained by Geoff T. Murphy. Gurner’s Lane is best remembered for winning the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double in 1982.

1987 ~ KENSEi (NZ) the chestnut gelding thoroughbred racehorse ridden by Larry Olsen won the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday 3rd November 1987. Kensei was trained by Les J. Bridge.

1992 ~ SUBZERO the grey gelding thoroughbred racehorse ridden by Greg Hall won the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday 3rd November 1992. Subzero was trained by Lee Freedman.

1995 – Kendall Jenner the American model was born on the 3rd November 1995.

1998 ~ JEZABEEL the brown mare thoroughbred racehorse ridden by Chris Munce won the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday 3rd November 1998, trained by Brian Jenkins. Jezabeel was the only horse to have won both the Melbourne Cup and the Auckland Cup in 1998.

1936 – The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation was established on the 2nd November 1936.

1936 – The British Broadcasting Corporation initiated the BBC Television Service, the world’s first regular, high-definition service on the 2nd November 1936. It was renamed BBC1 in 1964.

1947 – The H-4 Hercules also known as the Spruce Goose was flown by Howard Hughes on its maiden (and only) flight on the 2nd November 1947, in California. The H-4 Hercules was the largest fixed-wing aircraft ever built, the largest flying boat ever built and had the largest wingspan of any aircraft in history.

1957 – The Levelland UFO Case in Levelland, Texas on the 2nd November 1957 generated national publicity.

1959 – The M1 motorway first section of the 1st inter-urban motorway in the United Kingdom was opened on the 2nd November 1959, between the present day junctions 5 and 18, along with the M10 motorway and M45 motorway.

1960 – Penguin Books was found not guilty of obscenity in the trial R v Penguin Books Ltd., the Lady Chatterley’s Lover case on the 2nd November 1960.

1982Cosentino the Australian illusionist and escapologist was born Paul Cosentino in Victoria on the 2nd November 1982. Cosentino came 2nd in the 2011 series of Australia’s Got Talent. 2003 Cliff Young the Australian potato farmer and athlete from Beech Forest, Victoria died at the age of 81 on the 2nd November 2003 (born 1922). 2011 ~ DUNADEN the French trained thoroughbred racehorse won the 2011 MELBOURNE CUP on Tuesday 1st November 2000. Dunaden was ridden by Christophe Lemaire and trained by Mikel Delzangles. He was the 1st horse to win the Hong Kong Vase after winning the Melbourne Cup. Dunaden was originally purchased for €1,500 as a foal at a sale in France in 2006, and sold to Pearl Bloodstock Pty (Mgr. R Levitt) in 2010 for about $200,000., and won $3.3 million at the 2011 Melbourne Cup. Dunaden beat Red Cadeaux in the closest photo-finish ever in the Melbourne Cup.

1955Ruby Hunter the Australian singer and songwriter was born on the banks of the Murray River in South Australia on the 31st October 1955 (died 2010 aged 54). Ruby Hunter was a member of the Ngarrindjeri nation of Aboriginal tribes, and often performed with her partner Archie Roach, whom both met as homeless teenagers. Ruby was forcibly taken from her family at the age of 8 as part of the Stolen Generation. Ruby Hunter received two ARIA Award nominations, for Best Indigenous Release for Thoughts Within (1995), and Best Blues & Roots Album for Feeling Good (2000).

2003Bethany Hamilton the American 13 year old professional surfer had her left arm bitten off by a 14 to 15 foot tiger shark on the 31st October 2003, while having a morning surf along Tunnels Beach, Kauai with her best friend Alana Blanchard, her father and brother. Bethany overcame the injury and returned to professional surfing. She wrote about her experience in the 2004 autobiography Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board. In 2011 the feature film Soul Surfer was released, based on the book.

1998 – Space Shuttle Discovery blasted off on STS-95 with 77-year old John Glenn on board on the 29th October 1998. John Glenn became the oldest person to go into space.

1998 – HURRiCANE MiTCH made landfall in Honduras on the 29th October 1998. Hurricane Mitch was the 2nd deadliest Atlantic hurricane in history, with 19,325 people killed. It was the most powerful and destructive hurricane of the 1998 Atlantic hurricane season, with winds of 285 km/h (180 mph). Hurricane Mitch matched the 4th most intense Atlantic hurricane on record as of 1998. Mitch struck Florida as a strong tropical storm. The hurricane left 2.7 million people homeless, and a damage bill of over $6 billion.

2008 – Delta Air Lines merged with Northwest Airlines on the 29th October 2008, which created the world’s largest airline and reduced the number of US legacy carriers to 5.

2012 ~ HURRiCANE SANDY aka SUPERSTORM SANDY, the devastating tropical cyclone made landfall at New Jersey on the coastline of America’s north-east on the 29th October 2012. Hurricane Sandy was the largest Atlantic hurricane in diameter on record, with winds spanning 1,800 km (1,100 miles), and affected at least 24 states, from Florida to New England. Sandy brought a destructive storm surge to New York City, flooding streets, tunnels and subway lines in Lower Manhattan. Massive destruction occurred along the Jersey Shore in New Jersey. Estimations suggest the damage bill will be over $52 billion, which would rank Sandy in the top 5 most destructive hurricanes of all time. Super Storm Sandy caused 193 deaths.

1697Canaletto the Italian artist was born on the 28th October in 1697 (d. 1768).

1848 – The 1st railroad in Spain, between Barcelona and Mataró was opened on the 28th October in 1848.

1886 – The 1st ticker-tape parade in the World took place in New York City on the 28th October 1886, when office workers spontaneously threw ticker tape into the streets as the Statue of Liberty was dedicated.

1892 ~ CHARLES-ÉMiLE REYNAUD projected the 1st ANiMATED CARTOON FiLM to the public, Pauvre Pierrot (aka Poor Pete) at the Musée Grévin (waxwork museum) in Paris, France, on the 28th October 1892. Reynaud created the Praxinoscope in 1877 and the Théâtre Optique in 1888, which was seen for the first time in a public performance, in the show, billed as Pantomimes Lumineuses, which included 3 cartoons, Pauvre Pierrot, Un bon bock, and Le Clown et ses chiens, each consisting of 500 to 600 individually painted images (= 15 minute duration). Reynaud was the projectionist, and accompanied by a piano player. The show remained at the Musée Grévin until 1900, and was seen by over 500,000 people.
