1890 ~ CARBiNE won the Melbourne Cup on the 4th November 1873 with jockey R. Ramage. Carbine came from New Zealand and was a direct descendant of Phar Lap. He competed carrying the weight record of 65.77kg, beating 38 other runners. The Melbourne Cup prize money was£13,230.
1921 – Hara Takashi the Japanese Prime Minister was assassinated in Tokyo on the 4th November 1921.
1930 ~ PHAR LAP won the Melbourne Cup on the 4th November 1930 with jockey Jim Pike. Phar Lap was the only horse to be given legend status by the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. He holds the record for the shortest priced favourite in the Melbourne Cup. During the 1930 Melbourne Cup, bookmakers realised they would lose a fortune if Phar Lap was to win, and incidentally, he was shot at by gangsters on that day. Tommy Woodcock saved Phar Lap by placing himself and his pony between the shot.The Melbourne Cup prize money was£12,429.

Dunaden was originally purchased for €1,500 as a foal at a sale in France in 2006, and sold to Pearl Bloodstock Pty (Mgr. R Levitt) in 2010 for about $200,000., and won $3.3 million at the 2011 Melbourne Cup. Dunaden beat Red Cadeaux in the closest photo-finish ever in the Melbourne Cup.

1955 ~ Ruby Hunter the Australian singer and songwriter was born on the banks of the Murray River in South Australia on the 31st October 1955 (died 2010 aged 54). Ruby Hunter was a member of the Ngarrindjeri nation of Aboriginal tribes, and often performed with her partner Archie Roach, whom both met as homeless teenagers. Ruby was forcibly taken from her family at the age of 8 as part of the Stolen Generation. Ruby Hunter received two ARIA Award nominations, for Best Indigenous Release for Thoughts Within (1995), and Best Blues & Roots Album for Feeling Good (2000).
1999 – EgyptAir Flight 990 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on the 31st October 1999, killing all 217 people on board.
2000 – Willow Smith the American actress and singer was born on the 31st October 2000.
2003 ~ Bethany Hamilton the American 13 year old professional surfer had her left arm bitten off by a 14 to 15 foot tiger shark on the 31st October 2003, while having a morning surf along Tunnels Beach, Kauai with her best friend Alana Blanchard, her father and brother. Bethany overcame the injury and returned to professional surfing. She wrote about her experience in the 2004 autobiography Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board. In 2011 the feature film Soul Surfer was released, based on the book.

1998 – HURRiCANE MiTCHmade landfall in Honduras on the 29th October 1998. Hurricane Mitch was the 2nd deadliest Atlantic hurricane in history, with 19,325 people killed. It was the most powerful and destructive hurricane of the 1998 Atlantic hurricane season, with winds of 285 km/h (180 mph). Hurricane Mitch matched the 4th most intense Atlantic hurricane on record as of 1998. Mitch struck Florida as a strong tropical storm. The hurricane left 2.7 million people homeless, and a damage bill of over $6 billion.
2008 – Delta Air Lines merged with Northwest Airlines on the 29th October 2008, which created the world’s largest airline and reduced the number of US legacy carriers to 5.
2012 ~ HURRiCANE SANDYaka SUPERSTORM SANDY, the devastating tropical cyclonemade landfall at New Jerseyon the coastline of America’s north-east on the 29th October 2012. Hurricane Sandy was the largest Atlantic hurricane in diameter on record, with winds spanning 1,800 km (1,100 miles), and affected at least 24 states, from Florida to New England. Sandy brought a destructive storm surge to New York City, flooding streets, tunnels and subway lines in Lower Manhattan. Massive destruction occurred along the Jersey Shore in New Jersey. Estimations suggest the damage bill will be over $52 billion, which would rank Sandy in the top 5 most destructive hurricanes of all time. Super Storm Sandy caused 193 deaths.

1892 ~ CHARLES-ÉMiLE REYNAUD projected the 1st ANiMATED CARTOON FiLM to the public, Pauvre Pierrot(aka Poor Pete) at the Musée Grévin (waxwork museum) in Paris, France, on the 28th October 1892. Reynaud created the Praxinoscope in 1877 and the Théâtre Optique in 1888, which was seen for the first time in a public performance, in the show, billed as Pantomimes Lumineuses, which included 3 cartoons, Pauvre Pierrot, Un bon bock, and Le Clown et ses chiens, each consisting of 500 to 600 individually painted images (= 15 minute duration). Reynaud was the projectionist, and accompanied by a piano player. The show remained at the Musée Grévin until 1900, and was seen by over 500,000 people.
