1920 ~ Werner Klemperer the German-born American actor was born on the 22nd March 1920 (died 2000). Werner Kleperer was best known as Colonel Klink in Hogan’s Heroes. 

1954 – The London bullion market reopened on the 22nd March 1954, after being closed since 1939.

1960 – Arthur Leonard Schawlow and Charles Hard Townes receivde the 1st patent for a laser on the 22nd March 1960.

1963 – The Beatles‘ 1st album, Please Please Me, was released in the United Kingdom on the 22nd March 1963.

2013 ~ Del Kathryn Barton won the Archibald Prize for 2013, with her portrait of actor Hugo Weaving. The announcement was made on Friday 22nd March 2013, at the Art Gallery of NSW
