NOVEMBER 20 ~ ON THiS DAY in History

2012 ~ SAMANTHA JADE from Perth won the 4th season of the X FACTOR in Australia on the 20th November 2012. The 25 year old pint-sized singer’s recording dream finally came true when she beat Jason Owen and The Collective in the final. She had been dropped by several record labels before deciding to give it one last shot on The X Factor. Samantha Jade won a Sony Music recording contract and a management deal. Her first single “What You’ve Done To Me” was succesfully released.

1988 – Rhys Wakefield the Australian actor was born on the 19th November 1988.

1989 ~ John McCarthy the Australian footballer from Port Adelaide Football Club was born on the 19th November 1989 9 (died 9th September 2012 aged 22). John McCarthy also played for the Collingwood Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). John McCarthy came from a family of VFL and AFL footballers, including his brother and father who played for Geelong, and his grandfather who played for St Kilda.

1928 – Release of the animated short Steamboat Willie was on the 18th November 1928. It the 1st fully synchronized sound cartoon, directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, featuring the 3rd appearances of cartoon characters Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. This date is also considered by the Disney corporation to be Mickey’s birthday.

1929 – The Grand Banks earthquake 1929 off the south coast of Newfoundland in the Atlantic Ocean on the 18th November had a Richter magnitude of 7.2  earthquake, centered on Grand Banks, breaking 12 submarine transatlantic telegraph cables, triggering a tsunami that destroyed many south coast communities in the Burin Peninsula.

2012 ~ A TOTAL SOLAR ECLiPSE took place in Far North Queensland in Australia on the 14th November 2012, where big crowds lined the beaches and hillside lookouts. A partial eclipse was experienced in all of eastern Australia. This was the 1st total solar eclipse in Australia since 2002, the next will not be until 2028. 1926 ~ SAM HASKiNS the British photographer, was born in South Africa on the 11th November 1926. He started his photographic career in Johannesburg, South Africa and in 1968 moved to London. Sam Haskins is best known for his contribution to nude photography, in-camera image montage. His most influential photography books were Cowboy Kate (1965) and Haskins Posters (1973). He died at the age of 83, at home in Bowral, Australia on the 26th November 2009.
